Ecommerce automation
Automation for ecommerce operations
Order, inventory, fulfillment, and customer workflows that currently depend on a person remembering the next step. The point is fewer manual handoffs, with a clear path when something fails.
Operations first, tools second
WB Digital is not a general automation consultancy. The workflows we take on are the ones around a store: an order that should reach the warehouse, a stock count that should update the product, a customer who should exist in the CRM, a failed record someone should see the same day.
Shopify Flow, Klaviyo, Gorgias, and Zapier are tools we use when they fit. They are not the offer. If the workflow is really “these two systems of record do not share data,” the right project is an integration, and the automation sits on top of data you can trust. When the step itself needs a model, reading tickets, drafting product data, or answering from your own documents, that is AI for ecommerce operations.
Workflows
- Orders
- Routing, tagging, holds for fraud or missing data, and the handoff to an ERP, OMS, or warehouse.
- Inventory
- Low-stock alerts, location rules, and the update back to the store when a count changes.
- Fulfillment
- Shipment creation, tracking notifications, and the cases that should stop instead of shipping the wrong thing.
- Customers
- New accounts, B2B companies, and CRM updates that should not wait for a weekly export.
- Marketing and support
- Klaviyo events that reflect real orders, and support tools such as Gorgias receiving the context an agent needs.
- Reporting and exceptions
- A daily view of what failed, not another dashboard nobody checks. The exception queue is the product.
A workflow is finished when the exception is handled
Automating the happy path is easy to demo and easy to outgrow. The useful version names the cases that should stop: an address the warehouse cannot ship, a SKU the ERP does not know, a refund the store recorded and the accounting system did not. Those cases need an owner. A quiet failure is worse than the original spreadsheet, because the team thinks the job is done.
Smaller automations can start inside a Shopify Optimization Sprint. Multi-step operational work is scoped with the systems it touches.
Questions
What is ecommerce automation?
- It is the operational work that should happen when an order, a stock change, a return, or a customer event occurs: routing, notifications, updates to a CRM or 3PL, and the exception path when something does not match. It is not a pile of disconnected zaps.
Do you use Zapier?
- Yes, when the workflow is simple, the volume is modest, and a failure is easy to see. Higher volume, stricter data rules, or an ERP connection usually belongs in a proper integration instead of a chain of tasks.
Can you automate Shopify operations without rebuilding the store?
- Yes. Order routing, tagging, notifications, Klaviyo events, support handoff, and inventory exceptions can be added around a store that otherwise stays as it is.
